PMGKAY Latest News: Crores of families are getting the benefit of Pradhan Mantri Garib Kalyan Anna Yojana (PMGKAY) in the country. Free ration is being distributed continuously under the PMGKAY scheme at ration shops across the country. However, the distribution of free ration is set to happen only by the month of September. The free plan can be discontinued after this month. On the other hand, it is being discussed in the Food Ministry that the Union Cabinet may soon take a decision to take this scheme forward. According to sources, if this scheme is extended till March 2023, then how much burden can there be on the government and what is the situation now. We are going to tell you about this information.

no rice stock
If the PMGKAY scheme is extended for the next 6 months from October 2022 to March 2023, then there is a possibility of a burden of 90 thousand crores on the central government. If we look at the open market, there is no stock of rice for planning for sale or for Ethanol Bleeding Program (EBP) and other requirements.

Historically there will be rice shortage
If the Pradhan Mantri Garib Kalyan Anna Yojana (PMGKAY) is increased for the 7th time, then the stock of rice from the buffer will decrease. This will be the first time in the last 20 years. Due to the distribution of free food (wheat-rice) under PMGKAY by October-March of the financial year 2022-23, there will be a historical shortage of rice in the buffer stock.

what is the situation
Let us tell you that if the PMGKAY scheme is extended for the 7th time, then on April 1, 2023, the wheat stock in the central pool will be reduced by 90-93 lakh tonnes against the buffer stock of 74 lakh tonnes. The sixth phase of the PMGKAY scheme is ending in September 2022, that is, after this month the distribution of free food (wheat-rice) under the PMGKAY scheme will stop.

how much is the stock of rice
According to food ministry sources, till April 1, 2023, the stock of rice in the government buffer will be 12-13 million tonnes. Which is less than the required buffer stock. By April 1, 2023, there should be a stock of 135.8 million tonnes of rice in the buffer, but this time there may be a huge shortage of rice in the buffer stock.

90 thousand crores spent
According to an internal note of the Ministry of Food, the extension of PMGKAY scheme from October to March of the financial year 2022-23 will cost Rs 90,000 crore. Due to which the food subsidy expenditure will increase further. Along with this, the government will also need additional food grains.

Finance Ministry expressed concern
Let us tell you that from April 2020, more than Rs 316 crore is being estimated by the central government on the PMGKAY scheme. The Department of Expenditure, Ministry of Finance has already expressed serious concern over the budgetary cost of this free ration scheme.
