National Medical Commission: The National Medical Commission, India’s medical education regulator, has constituted an anti-ragging committee. Which has sought information from medical colleges about the cases of suicide by students in the last five years. The committee has created an email id antiragging@nmc.org to report such incidents, which provides another redressal mechanism to the students outside the college.
The committee, headed by Dr. Aruna Wanikar, chairperson of the Undergraduate Medical Education Board, reviewed complaints of ragging by students and parents during its first meeting held late last month. He said that all the colleges are requested to publish the notice issued by NMC on their website. Also, paste this notice at the places like Hostel, Mess, Classroom, Library, Lecturer Room, Common Room etc.
Apart from the complaint system, the committee has also asked medical colleges to send information about the number of students who died by suicide, the number of students who dropped out during the last five years. The committee has asked all colleges to send the details by October 7. President of Federation of Resident Doctors Association and resident doctor of Maulana Azad Medical College Dr Aviral Mathur said that the anti-ragging sentiment had gained momentum since the early 2000s, after which the incidents of ragging have come down significantly. He said that this initiative started by NMC is commendable.
Fee hike serious problem
Federation of All India Medical Association President Dr. Rohan Krishnan also agreed that the increase in fees in the field of education is more academic pressure than ragging. Although the number of medical seats has increased over the years, the competition has not diminished.
