This year Muharram will start from Thursday 20 July 2023. The reason for this is that the moon was not sighted yesterday evening (July 18). It was announced by the Markji Chand Committee that, due to non-sighting of the moon, the date of Muharram has been fixed on July 20. In such a situation, Muharram will start from July 20 and it will be the first date of Muharram, while Yom-e-Ashura will be celebrated on the tenth day of Muharram, whose date is July 29.

It is said that in the year 61 Hijri (680th), 72 of his companions, including Imam Hussain, the grandson of Prophet Muhammad, were martyred in Karbala, Iraq. This war took place in Karbala, Iraq between the army of Yazid and Hazrat Imam Hussain. In this war, Imam Hussain had given martyrdom along with his 72 companions for the protection of Islam. Muharram is celebrated only in the grief of the martyrdom of Imam Hussain and his companions. That’s why the month of Muharram is a month of sorrow for the people of the Muslim community.

When is Yom-e-Ashura and what is its importance
Yom-e-Ashura is celebrated on the tenth day of Muharram. This year, Youm-e-Ashura will be on 29 July 2023. It is a day of mourning for the people of the Muslim community. According to the beliefs related to the religion of Islam, about 1400 years ago, on the 10th day of Muharram, Hazrat Imam Hussain, the grandson of Prophet Hazrat Muhammad, was martyred. People of Shia community keep fast from the first day of Muharram to the ninth day. On the other hand, the people of the Sunni community keep fast on the ninth and tenth of Muharram. On the day of Yom-e-Ashura, people wear black clothes and observe mourning. Tajiya’s procession is taken out from the Imambara of the cities. Tajiya is a dome shape, which is made with the help of bamboo, paper and foil of many colors. It is prepared as a symbol of the grave of Hazrat Imam Hussain.
