Garuda Purana Niti Granth: Birth and death are both destiny, the one who is born is certain to die and this is an unchanging truth. But in this cycle of birth and death, a person attains heaven or hell according to his deeds and state of mind. The incidents of birth and death have also been explained in detail in Garuda Purana. In Hinduism, many rules have to be followed for the whole 13 days after the death of a family member. One of these is not to leave the dead body alone after death.

There is no law for cremation after sunset in Hinduism. That’s why the dead body is kept at home overnight. On the other hand, even if a person dies during the Panchak period, his dead body is not burnt before the end of the Panchak period. If the son or daughter is not near after the death of a person and it takes time to come, then in such a situation also wait for the cremation and the dead body is kept at home overnight. But the dead body should not be left alone at all. The reasons for this have been explained in Garuda Purana as to why the dead body is not left alone after death.

For these reasons the dead body should not be left alone

  • It is told in Garuda Purana that by leaving the dead body alone, the evil spirits wandering around can enter the body of the deceased. Due to this, not only the body of the deceased but also the family members can be in danger.
  • If the dead body is left alone, cannibals, red ants or animals crawling around can harm the dead body. That’s why until the cremation of the dead body is done, one person of the house remains sitting near it.
  • It is said that after death the soul of the deceased resides there. Till the dead body is not cremated, the association of the deceased with the family members remains. In such a situation, if the family members leave the dead body alone, then the soul of the deceased may also become unhappy due to this.
