This has happened only once in the history of IPL, when the team that bought the most expensive player won the title. 

In 2013, Mumbai Indians won the IPL trophy for the first time. That year, the team made Glenn Maxwell a part of their team by paying a price of 6.3 crores. Maxwell was the most expensive sold in that year’s auction. Although Maxwell did not make any special contribution in making Mumbai the champion that year. Let’s know what is the condition of the teams that bought the most expensive players every year. 

Mahendra Singh Dhoni (2008)

Chennai Super Kings team bought Mahendra Singh Dhoni in 2008 for 9.5 crores. Dhoni proved to be the most expensive player of that year. But Chennai lost in the final in 2008. 

Andrew Flintop and Kevin Pietersen (2009)

In 2009, Andrew Flintoff and Kevin Pietersen were the most expensive players of the IPL. Andrew Flintop was included by Chennai and Kevin Pietersen by RCB for 9.8 crores in their respective teams. Both the teams failed to win the title. 

Shane Bond and Kieron Pollard (2010)

In 2010, KKR bought Shane Bond and Mumbai Indians bought Kieron Pollard for Rs 4.8 crore. KKR could not go to the playoffs that year. Whereas Mumbai lost in the final. 

Gautam Gambhir (2011)

In 2011, KKR included Gautam Gambhir in their team by paying a price of 14.9 crores. However, this team could not even come close to the title. 

Ravindra Jadeja (2012)

In 2012, the team of Chennai Super Kings bought Ravindra Jadeja for 12.8 crores. The team lost in the final that year.

Glenn Maxwell (2013)

In 2013, Glenn Maxwell was bought by Mumbai Indians for Rs 6.3 crore. This was the only year when the team with the most expensive player won the IPL title. 

Yuvraj Singh (2014)

Royal Challengers Bangalore bought Yuvraj Singh in 2014 for 14 crores. RCB was at number 7 in the points table that year.

Yuvraj Singh (2015)

In 2015, Delhi included Yuvraj Singh in their team by giving 16 crores. But the Delhi team could not even reach the playoffs. 

Shane Watson (2016)

Royal Challengers Bangalore included Shane Watson in the team in 2016 by paying a price of 9.5 crores. But that year RCB lost the final match. 

Ben Stokes (2017)

Ben Stokes was bought by Rising Pune Super Giants in 2017 for 14.5 crores. But the team had to face defeat in the finals. 

Ben Stokes (2018)

In the very next year i.e. 2018, Ben Stokes was bought by Rajasthan Royals for 12.5 crores. But the team failed to win the IPL title. 

Jaidev Unadkat and Varun Chakraborty (2019)

KKR bought Varun Chakraborty and Rajasthan Royals bought Jaydev Unadkat for 8.4 crores in 2019. That year both the teams could not even reach the top-4. 

Pat Cummins (2020)

The Kolkata team made Pat Cummins a part of their team in 2020 by paying a price of Rs 15.5 crore. But the team did not even reach the playoffs. 

Chris Morris (2021)

In 2021, the Rajasthan Royals team bought Chris Morris for 16.25 crores. But the team failed to win the title. 

Ishaan Kishan (2022)

Mumbai Indians bought Ishaan Kishan in 2022 for 15.25 crores. The Mumbai team was at number 10 in the points table in 2022.
