Startup Classroom: If you have to teach only one skill to someone, which skill should it be? My answer to this would be- the skill to connect and stay connected with people. Today business startups are failing every day, and so are we as individuals. The one big reason behind all this is the people around us. Some wrong people who are taking our life backward instead of moving forward can be the reason for this. Today, in the era of social media, our social media profile will be found on almost every platform, but we are equally unsocial socially. We do not have some people who can listen or give us the right opinion at the right time without judging us.
In the business world, we have often heard, “Your Network is Your Networth”, but even after this many people are not able to create an effective network. So let’s talk today that if you want to make your place among people, then how these five things can help you-
1. Don’t think twice before hanging up
I have often heard in my Effective Business Networking Skills training that people want to call but then they keep thinking whether they will be busy, whether it is the right time to call or not and doing this for many months and then years. That’s why we go far and far away from them. So what to do is to call at least 2-3 old friends, colleagues every day, just put it like this, don’t think that he will be busy, where will he be, will he pick up or not. You just call, if the next one is free, he will pick up, otherwise he will disconnect, your job is to call, someone will pick up the call. Try it, you will really like it and yes there is no need to be hurt, just keep focusing on the next call.
2- Come meet anytime, at someone’s house or office
All of us are never so busy that we cannot meet people, often after leaving the job, we are completely cut off from them, in such a situation those relationships which were a part of every day, become less. So don’t do this at all now, if you get a chance to go to the old office sometime in a month or two, keep at least 30 minutes or 1 hour extra time, shaking hands with old colleagues is like shaking hearts forever.
Saying thank you to your old boss, seniors
We often remember the bad experiences but forget the good ones. Don’t know how many people have cooperated in our life because of which we are here today. So just call any mentor, teacher, boss and say thank you to them, whatever you have learned from them is of no value. If there are moral values along with economic values in life, then life becomes more powerful.
4- Appreciate!
Look around you, there are many such things in people, which you can praise, definitely do, I think, praising someone is the biggest tool of self-branding, you are always printed in his mind forever, yes, be careful, if praise is over dosed, then it starts to look like flattery.
5- Before taking work from people, think about their work
Many people are not able to network because they go with an agenda in the first meeting itself, then if that agenda does not fit then they do not like it. It works in business meetings, but it does not work at all in network building, first make people your own or make them your own, then all other things start happening automatically, keep in mind, to withdraw first in bank account also you have to deposit first.
