Shreyas Iyer: The Mumbai team playing the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy has got a big boost. Shreyas Iyer has joined the team in Rajkot. He will be available for the match against Rajasthan on Tuesday and Mumbai can make him a part of their playing XI. For Iyer, Mumbai has obtained special permission from the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI).
All the teams have announced a 15-man squad for the Mushtaq Ali Trophy and this is the reason why Mumbai had to take special permission for Iyer. The BCCI had made it clear to Mumbai that even if they add 16 players to the team, only 15 players will be able to be present in the dugout. Iyer, who recently played the ODI series against South Africa, was made a reserve player in the Indian team for the first T20 World Cup, but later the plan was changed.
Now that Iyer did not go to Australia, he decided to play for Mumbai. The tournament had already started and that is why they had to seek permission from the BCCI. Shardul Thakur has gone to Australia as a reserve player and Suryansh Shegde was included in the Mumbai team in his place. Since Iyer’s arrival, Suryansh will now have to sit outside the dugout.
The Mumbai Cricket Association has not expressed concern about the fitness of Mumbai captain Ajinkya Rahane, who has not played in the last two matches. Rahane is going to be available in the next match. In Rahane’s absence, Prithvi Shaw captained Mumbai in two matches.
