Ricky Ponting on Australia New ODI Captain: Former Australia captain and two-time ODI World Cup winning captain Ricky Ponting believes that Test captain Pat Cummins can be the new captain of the team in the 50-over format after the retirement of opener Aaron Finch. Finch is currently the captain of the T20 team. He announced his retirement from ODIs during Australia’s recent home series against New Zealand, which the hosts won 3–0.
Less than a year is left for the ODI World Cup to be held in India in 2023. In such a situation, Ponting feels that 29-year-old Pat Cummins would be a good choice for the leadership role. However, this will increase his workload in international cricket.
Ricky Ponting said on the ICC Review Show, “I think the next ODI captain will be Pat Cummins. I know he doesn’t play all ODIs for obvious reasons, because his workload in Test cricket, like all fast bowlers, has been in the past. A few years has been too much.”

Ponting further felt that Australia should consider Steve Smith and David Warner for future leadership in the white-ball team, which they have not captained since the ball-tampering ban in South Africa in 2018. Currently Steve Test is in the role of vice-captain.
He said, “I want to say something about what happened to Steve Smith. He is now Test vice-captain again and has been the first captain and was really at the center of the whole controversy in Cape Town. If Pat Cummins ever If he misses the Test, Steve Smith can become Australia’s captain again in Test match cricket.”
