According to mythology, Lankapati Ravana used to worship Lord Shiva. Once Ravana did severe penance on the Himalayas. During this, he cut off his 9 heads and offered them on the Shivling, when the turn of the 10th head came, Mahadev himself appeared. Seeing the devotion of Ravana, Shiva asked him to ask for a boon.

Ravana wanted Lord Shiva to go to Lanka with him, so he asked for Kamna Linga as a boon. Bholenath fulfilled his wish but he also put a condition. Mahadev told Ravana that if you keep the Shivling somewhere on the way, it will be established there. You won’t be able to pick it up again. Ravana accepted the condition but on the way he put down the Shivling by mistake. He tried hard to lift Kamna Linga but he was defeated.
It is said that Ravana understood God’s Leela, after that Brahma, Vishnu and other gods came and worshiped that Shivling, since then Mahadev sits in the form of Kamna Linga in Devghar.
