Hundreds are feared to be dead in western Afghanistan after a series of powerful quakes shook western Afghanistan on Saturday. According to the United Nations 320 people have lost their lives, however, the organisation later said that the figure was still being verified.
“Significant casualties are likely and the disaster is potentially widespread,” a preliminary United States Geological Survey (USGS) report said, as per The Guardian. “Past events with this alert level have required a regional or national level response.”
The USGS website indicated seven earthquakes in the region, including a 5.9-magnitude earthquake 21.7 miles north-north-west of Herat, a 6.3-magnitude earthquake 20.5 miles north-north-east of Zindah Jan and another 6.3-magnitude earthquake 18 miles north-north-east of Zindah Jan, which is about 26 miles west of Herat city.
