‘Family people supported in difficult situations’
In a special conversation with ABP Live, Raja Babu Sharma told how the family members supported after that train accident, which changed his life. He said that “they say that the family has a big hand in making whom, when I was going through a difficult time, when I was young, my mother took care of me. He says that everyone felt sorry for me at that time.” Used to eat, because I had lost one leg in the accident, but the mother used to say that her son had lost only one leg, but it is more important that he is alive.
Became Brand Ambassador of Kanpur South Premier League Tournament
Raja Babu Sharma, a resident of Kalpi village of Chowk village in Uttar Pradesh started playing street cricket after the train accident. After this he made his place in the team of Kanpur. At that time he was playing regularly. Actually, he became famous due to his superb ability to play his shot. Local newspapers started writing about this player. In the year 2011, Kanpur Cricket Association organized Kanpur South Premier League. Where Raja Babu also went to trial and did well, but ICC rules did not allow him to become a runner and hence he could not play. However, the organizers made him the brand ambassador of the tournament.
Uttar Pradesh government honored in the year 2015
Raja Babu Sharma did not know much about cricket for the disabled, as he was playing regular cricket till this time. In fact, in the year 2013, Raja Babu Sharma met Amit Sharma of Meerut, who was then the president of the Uttar Pradesh Disabled Cricket Association. After this the situation started changing for Raja Babu Sharma. Raja Babu Sharma first made it to the team, then became the captain of the team. Raja Babu Sharma says that on December 3, 2015, I was honored by the Uttar Pradesh government for performing well in disabled cricket in Lucknow. Apart from this, the best cricketer award was also received in Ahmedabad. At the same time, in the year 2017, former Bihar Chief Minister Jitan Ram Manjhi honored me.
Family is running due to e-rickshaw
After playing cricket for almost 6 years, the team was disbanded due to lack of sponsors. Raja Babu Sharma opened a dhaba so that he could continue playing cricket. There along with Raja Babu Sharma, many more players like him joined. However, in the year 2018, SP Chaudhary, a Noida-based businessman, came to know about Raja Babu Sharma, after which he gifted an e-rickshaw to Raja Babu Sharma. Now this e-rickshaw is their main source of income. Raja Babu Sharma is currently taking care of 2 children including his wife due to this e-rickshaw.
Raja plays for Madhya Pradesh wheelchair cricket team
Raja Babu Sharma says that he was affectionately called ‘Prannath’ by friends and fellow players, as he was able to score runs easily against the bowlers with his brilliant batting. However, now Raja plays wheelchair cricket for the Madhya Pradesh Wheelchair Cricket Team. He says that our team is very strong, we have won the prestigious Madhavrao Scindia tournament many times. He said that working hard for the upcoming tournament. He further says that I have played great cricket in this tournament. According to Raja, he has hit around 120-130 sixes in 15-20 matches. During this the strike rate has been around 225. Recently, Raja Babu Sharma played a quick innings of 72 runs in just 21 balls at TNM Academy.
‘People think that I must have got a lot of money from the government, but…’
Raja Babu Sharma says that people think that I must have got a lot of money from the government, but the reality is far from their imagination. To be honest, my financial condition is so weak that I do not even have a decent cricket bat. He further says that it will take some money to get my e-rickshaw repaired, but at this time I do not have that much money. However, Raja Babu Sharma hopes that he will definitely be able to change the situation with his hard work. It is worth noting that BCCI has recognized people playing handicapped cricket. Also, a separate board has been created for disabled cricket, which is called DCCI (Differently-Abled Cricket Council of India). The President of the Differently-abled Cricket Council of India is Dr. Mahantesh GK. However, they have started a registration process to collect data about people like Raja and streamline the entire process.
