Google Hangouts is closed: Google has finally shut down its voice and video chat service, Google Hangouts. Messaging service that was first introduced as a free app in 2013. Now this service will neither be available on Android nor iOS, nor will it be available on the web through its official website or Chrome extension. The service now joins a long list of Google products and services that are shutting down Google Stadia, YouTube Originals, Google+, Google Allo and Google Play Music.
Google signaled users to end Hangouts in 2020 only after it announced that Google Chat was available for everyone to use. At the time, the company asked Hangouts users to upgrade to Google Chat within Gmail or as a separate app. Then earlier this year, Google officially began shutting down Hangouts for everyone, starting with the Hangouts Android and iOS apps, which were shut down for use in July of this year.
Let us tell you that Google first introduced the Hangouts app, then the Hangouts Chrome extension, in which the official website of Hangouts was the only way for Hangouts users to access the service. Now, Google has also shut down the official website of Hangouts.
As of November 1, 2022, Hangouts Web has been redirected to Chat, while Google has terminated Hangouts. Users can still download all their data. The company is giving users time till January 1, 2023, to download a copy of their Hangouts data. If you haven’t downloaded your Hangouts data, here’s what to do.
How to download your Google Hangouts data
- Go to Google Takeout and sign in with the Google Account you use with Hangouts
- In Available Apps, select Hangouts and deselect the rest
- click next step
- Choose how often you want to download the backup. Since Hangouts is being upgraded to Google Chat soon, choose the one-time download option.
- Select the file type and click Export.
Once you hit Export, you’ll see a message telling you that Google is making a copy of the files from Hangouts. You will receive an email when the takeout process is complete. Once you’ve received the email, all you have to do is download the file to protect your Hangouts data.
