Fake Gifting Offer by Chinese Hackers: Festive season has arrived in India. To take advantage of India’s festive season, big e-commerce sites are wooing Indians with various festive sale offers, and giving big discounts to buyers. On the other hand, scammers are also trying to take advantage of this season. At a time when online shopping is done more in India, Chinese hackers can take advantage of this to rob Indians, steal their data by luring them with free gifts or free gifts.
India’s cyber-security team, CERT-IN (Indian Computer Emergency Response Team) has issued an advisory, in which the organization has warned users against falling prey to scams offering free gifts and offers. Cert-In said there have been several cases of adware targeting major brands and tricking customers into fraudulent phishing attacks and scams.
These adware are spread through messages on various social media and messaging platforms. They lure users to give gifts and rewards on any festival. Cert-In has written in its advisory that fake messages are spreading a lot these days on various social media platforms (WhatsApp, Telegram, Instagram etc.). Which are luring users by luring them with gift links and rewards. Such lures mostly target female users and are asking to share links between peers on WhatsApp/Telegram/Instagram accounts.
How is hunting made?
According to Cert-In, the victim receives a message containing a link to a phishing website which is an imitation of the websites of popular brands. In this, customers are lured with false claims of giving a special festive coupon etc. on answering a question. After this the spammers get the sensitive information of the customers such as their personal information, bank account information, password, OTP.
According to the government agency, these spammers and fake websites are mostly of Chinese origin. Most of the domains of these websites are .cn, .top, .xyz.
How to protect yourself from such attacks
CERT-In has issued some guidelines.
- Do not browse untrusted websites or click on untrusted links
- Review sender details before clicking a link in a message or email
- Click only on URLs that clearly indicate the website domain
- Never give your login password or credit card information over email or SMS
- use strong password
- Do not use the same password on more than one platform
- Download the app only from the App Store or Google Play Store
- Do not share your OTP with anyone
