Bureau of Indian Standards: Many things have become easier with the convenience of online shopping. However, there has been an increase in many cases regarding fraud. For this reason, the government has changed the rules for online platforms from time to time. The government has given information on how a customer can protect himself from fraudulent or data stealing platforms. Union Minister of State for Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution Ashwini Kumar Choubey has answered a question in the Lok Sabha.
The Union Minister said in a written reply that the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) has issued a notification regarding ‘online consumer review, principal and framework’. Accordingly, some suggestions have been given to protect the interest of the consumer from fake and misleading reviews in e-commerce. This notification issued by the Bureau of Indian Standards applies to all online platforms.
No platform can give fake reviews
As per the notification of BIS, no one can post fake reviews on the platform. It is mandatory to follow all the standards. If any platform does this then action can be taken. This notification issued by the government gives the right of privacy, security, transparency and accountability etc. to the customers.
This is how fake platforms can be investigated
The Bureau of Standards verifies in many ways – BIS checks whether the correct review has been done about this platform or the review has been posted in a fake manner. Here are several ways for this.

- Sending an email that asks the review author to confirm their registration by clicking on a link
- Verification from a program that protects websites
- Verification by telephone call or SMS

- Verification using one user per email address
- Verification using captcha system
