ICICI-Videocon Fraud Case: The CBI is tightening its grip on former Managing Director and CEO of ICICI Bank Chanda Kochhar and her husband Deepak Kochhar. The CBI probing the case has submitted this charge sheet in the City Civil and Sessions Court of Mumbai. In the charge sheet, the CBI has registered a case against the accused under IPC sections 420 (cheating), 20B (criminal conspiracy) and 409 (criminal conspiracy by public servant).
What is the whole matter?
According to the CBI, Chanda Kochhar allegedly committed a fraud of Rs 3,250 crore while holding the post of CEO (ICICI Bank Former CEO Chanda Kochhar) in ICICI Bank. In the year 2012, ICICI Bank gave a loan of 3,250 crores to Videocon Group. In return for this loan, Videocon’s promoter Venugopal Dhoot had benefited Chanda Kochhar’s husband’s company.
This loan was later declared a non-performing asset (NPA) by the bank. After this, Chanda Kochhar had to resign from her post in the year 2018 on charges of scam. The Kochhar couple were also arrested by the CBI on 23 December in connection with this fraud case. After this, the couple was later granted bail in January 2023 by the Bombay High Court.
The name of Dhoot’s relative is also included in the charge sheet.
According to media reports, apart from the Kochhar couple and Dhoot, the names of a chartered accountant and a relative of Dhoot have also been included in this charge sheet. This charge sheet has been submitted and its investigation is currently underway. After this investigation, a copy of this charge sheet will be handed over to the accused. After this, further action will be taken in the court.
