In the past few years, there has been a huge increase in the number of people buying a smartphone and so has the number of eSIM users. Ditching a physical SIM card to have a virtual one might seem pretty easy but, transferring eSIM from one device to another is one hell of a task. Tech giant Google acknowledged this issue last year at Mobile World Congress event and announced that it would soon launch an eSIM transfer tool for Android users which would make the switch of eSIMs between devices easier.
This new tool was first spotted by Google Pixel 8 users who were able to transfer their eSIM from an older Pixel to a new one. However, it was believed that the functionality might be limited to Pixel phones only. Now, it is clear that it isn’t the case.
As per a recent report by Android Police, the new eSIM transfer tool was recently spotted by a user who attempted to use the Samsung SIM’s transfer tool.
Samsung’s eSIM Transfer Tool Knows No Discrimination
Samsung had introduced the eSIM transfer tool in the One UI 5.1 update back in last year, however, it was limited to a handful of Galaxy devices only. With the recent Android 14 update, a tipster noted that the tool indicated compatibility not just with Galaxy phones but with non-Galaxy phones as well.
The report stated that the recent move by the South Korean smartphone maker is more than just a cosmetic change as when they opened the tool on their Galaxy S24 Ultra, a pop-up powered by Google Play Services opened on the nearby Pixel 8 Pro.
This activity means that soon users will be able to transfer their eSIMS from one phone to another. Notably, this functionality currently seems to be limited to United States’ network provider T-Mobile’s parent company Deutsche Telecom.
It is possible that the new functionality will take some time before it becomes compatible with network providers in India.
