Airlines made Manipur crisis a source of income, charging Rs 17,000 for an hour’s journey

Manipur Violence: Violence takes place anywhere in the country or a natural calamity occurs. In such a situation, the local people want to leave their homes and go out of the state under any circumstances. But for the airlines, this disaster turns into the biggest earning opportunity. This has happened before as well and once again the insensitivity of the domestic airlines has been exposed. After heavy violence in the country’s northeastern state of Manipur, people want to go out of the state, but the fares of the airlines are skyrocketing, due to which the difficulties of the people have increased. Airlines are demanding fares ranging from Rs 11,200 to Rs 17,000 for air travel of just one hour.

1 hour air travel, 11000 to 17000 fare

The nearest airports from Imphal, the capital of Manipur, are Guwahati and Kolkata. If you want to go from Imphal to Guwahati on May 9, 10, 11 and 12, then you will have to pay a fare ranging from Rs 11,200 to Rs 15,100 per person, on which GST will have to be paid separately. Earlier the fare used to be around Rs.2700. Airlines are charging more than Rs 17000 air fare for direct flight from Imphal to Kolkata on 9th May for 1.10 hours air travel. The charge for connecting flights is 20000 to 25000 rupees. Airlines used to charge Rs 3700 as fare in normal times. After the violence in Manipur, most people want to go to Guwahati or Kolkata.

First also airlines have done arbitrariness

After the violence that started last week in Manipur, 54 people have lost their lives. There has been a huge loss of life and property. The government has deployed army there. But people want to go out after saving their lives. But even if there is a disaster on the lives of the people, the purpose of the airlines is seen to be earning. This is not the first time when such an act is being seen from the airlines. Earlier, during the Jat movement in Haryana, the air fare was touching the sky.

Government handed over the right to decide the fare to the airlines

Last year, till August 31, 2022, the government was fixing the upper and lower band of air fare. When the government again gave the green signal to air travel during the lockdown during the Corona period, the government started regulating air fares. But after August 31, 2022, the government again handed over the right to airlines to fix air fares similar to the pre-corona era. Since then there has been a tremendous jump in airfares. The Standing Committee of the Parliament had also raised questions regarding the increase in air fares and the committee had recommended the government to impose a cap on the upper and lower limit of air fares.

Air passengers have no right to rob!

The committee said that in the name of commercialization, air passengers should not be given a chance to loot. The standing committee has asked the ministry to prepare such a pricing mechanism to fix air fares so that airlines cannot charge huge fares from passengers. But the way air fares have become costlier after the Manipur violence, questions are being raised on the government’s decision to hand over the right to fix air fares to the airlines.
