1,719 bribery cases registered in Lokpal this year, RTI revealed!

RTI Reveals : The Lokpal was formed to listen to the complaints of corruption being done by the officers sitting in high government posts and take action on them. This office has received 1,719 complaints so far this year, out of which 136 have been registered for investigation.

What the Lokpal Office said

According to information received under the ‘Right to Information’ Act, the office of the Ombudsman informed that out of the total complaints received till 2022-23 (August 21, 2022), 134 were in the prescribed format and 1,585 were without the prescribed format. 133 bribery complaints received in the prescribed format were registered, out of which 83 have been disposed of and 50 are pending. Out of the pending complaints, 12 are under investigation. The Lokpal office said that out of the complaints received without the prescribed format, only three were registered. The office said that out of a total of 1,719 complaints of bribery in 2022-23, 1,635 complaints are pending.

What rules were made by the central government

The central government had notified the Lokpal (complaints) rules in March 2020, in which it was proposed to file a complaint in a prescribed format. The Lokpal had last month decided to accept only corruption complaints received in the prescribed format. The Lokpal had received 5,680 complaints during 2021-22, out of which 169 were in the prescribed format and 5,511 complaints were without draft.

Too many posts are vacant

In response to a question, the Lokpal office said, “The posts of Director of Investigation and Director of Prosecution are vacant. As of now the Prosecution and Investigation Wings have not been constituted and the work is being done with the help of Central Bureau of Investigation and Central Vigilance Commission. Lokpal has been functioning without its regular head since May 27 this year. Justice Pradeep Kumar Mohanty is holding the additional charge of the Speaker. Two posts of judicial members are also vacant for two years.
