Union Budget 2023: Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman will present the country’s general budget tomorrow i.e. on 1 February. All the talks regarding the budget are happening since a long time. In the general budget presented every year, the government usually tells about the major financial plans for the next financial year. Funds are allocated to different ministries for different development works.
But all these things are such that you either know or you will comfortably read it somewhere, but today we are going to tell you some such interesting information related to the general budget, about which you hardly know.

- Before 2019, the Finance Minister of the country used to bring the budget in a suitcase in the form of a ledger, but Nirmala Sitharaman broke this tradition in 2019. She reached the Parliament by wrapping a file in a red cloth. This file was called ledger only.
- RK Shanmukham Chetty presented the first budget of independent India on 26 November 1947. Chetty served as the first Finance Minister of India from 1947 to 1948.
- A total of 73 general budgets, 14 interim budgets and 4 special or mini budgets have been presented since the country’s independence.
- Jawaharlal Nehru, Indira Gandhi and Rajiv Gandhi are such PMs who have also presented the budget.
- Before 2016, the budget was presented in the last days of February, but Arun Jaitley broke this tradition in 2017. He then presented the budget on 1 February. Since then the budget is presented on this date.
- The ‘Halwa Ceremony’ is an occasion celebrated by the Ministry of Finance, which marks the beginning of the budget printing process. The ‘Halwa’ is prepared in a traditional ‘kadhai’ (large pan) and served to all the employees involved in the budget making exercise for the country.
