What is the history of Amarnath Yatra?

According to the history related to Amarnath Yatra, Maharishi Bhrigu first visited the holy Amarnath cave. It is said that once the Kashmir valley was completely submerged in water, Maharishi Kashyap brought out the water through rivers and streams. In those days sage Bhrigu had come from the same route on his journey to the Himalayas. He was in search of solitude for penance. During this, he visited the cave of Baba Amarnath. Since then, every year in Amarnath, in the month of Sawan (July-August), the darshan of the holy cave started. Amarnath Yatra has been mentioned in detail in historian Kalhan’s book ‘Rajtarangini’ and French traveler François Bernier’s book.

Importance of Amarnath Yatra

Amarnath cave was called ‘Amareshwar’ in ancient times. People here also call it ‘Baba Barfani’ because of the formation of Shivling with snow. The Shaktipeeth of Goddess Parvati is located in the Amarnath cave, which is one of the 51 Shaktipeeths. It is said that the throat of Goddess Bhagwati had fallen here. The devotee who visits the Shivling (Baba Barfani) made in the holy cave of Amarnath with pure mind and devotion, attains salvation. It has also been said in the Puranas that one gets 10 times more merit from seeing and worshiping Linga in Kashi, 100 times more than Prayag and 1000 times more merit than Naimisharanya pilgrimage.

Amarnath Cave Mystery

The Amarnath cave remains covered with snow for most of the time except in summer. The secret of Amarnath cave is that Shivling is formed naturally here. That is, Shivling is not made here, but Shivling itself is made. Drops of water drip from the cracks of the ice from the roof of the cave, due to which the Shivling of ice is formed. Next to the Shivalinga, two other small ice Shivalingas are formed, which the devotees consider to be the symbol of Mother Parvati and Lord Ganesha. The Shivalinga of the Amarnath cave is the only Shivalinga in the world, which increases and decreases with the cycle of the moon’s light. It remains in its full size on the full moon of the Shukla Paksha of the month of Sawan and its size starts decreasing till the new moon. This event happens every year. Devotees from far and wide come every year for the Amarnath Yatra to have a darshan of this natural Shivling made of ice.
