Fasting story of Nirjala Ekadashi (Nirjala Ekadashi 2023 Vrat Katha)
According to the legend, Maharishi Vedvyas, the author of the Vedas, had once come to the palace of Pandava son Mahabali Bhima during the Mahabharata period. Bhim asked Devvyas ji – “O Munishreth! You are omniscient and know everything that in my family Yudhishthira, Arjuna, Nakula, Sahdev, Kunti, Draupadi all keep fast on Ekadashi and ask me to keep fast too. But I am unable to observe Ekadashi fast every month because I feel extremely hungry. That’s why you tell me such a solution, so that I can get the same result as fasting on Ekadashi.
Vedvyas ji said – O Bhimsen! Ekadashi fast must be observed to get heaven and freedom from hell. Bhima said – O Munishreth, even after eating enough food, my hunger is not satisfied. In such a situation, my work will not be able to be done by eating only one time.
Ved Vyas ji said- “O Bhimsen! You fast on Nirjala Ekadashi of Shukla Paksha of Jyestha month. In this, one has to sacrifice food and water only for one day. In this, the fasting person has to remain without eating and drinking from the sunrise of Ekadashi date till the sunrise of Dwadashi date. By fasting on this one Ekadashi, you will get the virtuous fruit equal to all the Ekadashis of the whole year. As per the order of Vyas ji, Bhima fasted on Nirjala Ekadashi and after that he attained salvation.
