The wheat processing industry is apprehensive that the price of flour will reach new heights in the next few days due to low production of wheat due to sudden increase in heat in March, low stock of grains with the government and increase in global demand. The reason behind this is that its price is increasing rapidly in major countries that consume flour. Traders and processors say that wheat prices range from Rs 27 to Rs 29.50 per kg in most areas of the country, which is much higher than the minimum support price (MSP) fixed by the government at Rs 20.15. Where the government is distributing wheat free of cost to the poor, no purpose is being served to save the lower middle class from this inflation.
According to a news of ET, in most areas of India, the price of wheat is 30 to 40 percent above the MSP. Traders say that the current price is at a record high price so far. In the last 4 months, the prices gradually increased from Rs 24 a kg to now above Rs 29.
Government has already taken steps
To control the prices, the government did many purposes. In August, the government decided to impose a complete ban on the export of wheat flour, in order to control its rising prices. Earlier in July, DGFT had said in a notification that the government has imposed conditions on the export of wheat flour, maida and semolina. Despite this, the price of wheat is not taking the name of freezing. Wheat flour exports from India increased by 200 percent during April-July 2022 as compared to last year due to increased demand abroad. Due to this, the prices in the domestic market also reached the sky.

Sowing of wheat increased in this season
Due to the increase in the price of wheat, the farmers have increased its sowing. Traders told that if the weather is favorable in the coming months, it is a sign of better crop. Till November 25, 15.2 million hectares of wheat had been sown, which is about 10.48 percent more than the area covered during the same period last year. Wheat is sown in about 3.05 crore hectares in the country.
Government will not sell wheat in the open market
The central government says it is monitoring the situation. Although it has also said that there is no plan to sell wheat in the open market. The government says that a decision will be taken over time on whether to resume selling in the open market for wheat or reduce the import duty.
The poor are getting free wheat
The government is giving free wheat till December 2022 under Pradhan Mantri Garib Kalyan Anna Yojana (PMGKAY). The government also said that even if the scheme is extended beyond December 2022, there will be enough food grains in the stock. Under PMGKAY, the government is giving 5 kg of wheat and rice free of cost to about 80 crore beneficiaries of the National Food Security Act. Apart from this, these beneficiaries also get ration from the government quota at a cheaper rate. PMGKAY, which was started during the first wave of Kovid, has been extended 7 times since then. The last time its time period was extended in September 2022.
