What is the relation of Lord Kartikeya with the south, on Skanda Shashthi, a fast of six days is kept here

Falgun Skanda Sashti 2023, Puja vidhi Muhurat and Importance: According to the Panchang, Skanda Shashthi is celebrated on the Shashthi date of Shukla Paksha of every month. Skanda Shashthi fasting and worship will be done on 25 February 2023 in the month of Phalgun. It is also called Santan Shashti or Kand Shashti. The worship of Skanda Shashthi is dedicated to Kartikeya, the eldest son of Lord Shiva and Mother Parvati.

Shashti Tithi is dedicated to Lord Skanda. It is believed that Lord Skanda was born on this date. Lord Skanda is known by names like Kartikeya, Murugan and Subrahmanyam etc. By fasting on Skanda Shashti, children remain free from pain and no calamity befalls them. At the same time, it is also considered best for having a child.

Falgun Skanda Shashti Muhurta

According to Dharmasindhu and Nirnayasindhu texts, the fast and worship of Skanda Shashti is observed between sunrise and sunset if Panchami Tithi ends. Apart from this, even if Shashti Tithi is starting, this fast is observed. Meeting of Shashthi Tithi with Panchami Tithi is considered very auspicious for Skanda Shashthi Vrat. For this reason, many times the fast of Skanda Shashthi is kept on Panchami Tithi as well.

In the month of Falgun 2023, the fasting and worship of Skanda Shashthi will be done on Saturday, 25 February. Shashthi Tithi of Falgun Shukla Paksha will start at 12:31 pm on 25th February and will end at 12:20 pm on 26th February.

Lord Skanda’s relation with South

By the way, the fasting festival of Skanda Shashthi is celebrated all over India. But it is especially important in the south. There are also many temples of Lord Skanda in the south. According to mythology, once Lord Kartikeya got angry with mother Parvati, father Lord Shiva and brother Ganesha over some issue. Then he went to Mallikarjuna from Mount Kailash, which is situated towards the south. That’s why South has been considered as his abode. Even in Vastu Shastra, the relation of south direction is also related to Lord Skanda i.e. Kartikeya.

Significance of Skanda Shashti 2023

According to mythology and Skandpuran related to religious texts, Skanda Shashthi Vrat has also been mentioned in Narad-Narayan dialogue. According to this, by observing this fast, all the troubles faced by the children go away. Shashti Tithi is also considered important for having a child. It is heard in the legend that, due to the effect of this fast, Rishi Chyavan got the light of his eyes. On the other hand, due to the effect of Skanda Shashthi Vrat and by the grace of Lord Skanda, Priyavrat’s dead child became alive again.

Skanda Shashthi Vrat is observed for the whole 6 days in the south.

In South India, the festival of Skanda Shashti is celebrated for 6 whole days. It is believed that one who observes this fast continuously for 6 days, gets desired fruits. In this, people can have food or fruit only once a day.

Skanda Shashti Puja Method

On the day of Skanda Shashti, the child form of Lord Kartikeya is worshipped, and along with it there is a ritual of worshiping the entire Shiva family. On the day of Skanda Shashthi, after taking bath in the morning, wear clean clothes and install the idol or picture of Kartikeya at the place of worship. Also install the idol or picture of Lord Shiva, Mata Gauri, Lord Ganesha. Keep an urn filled with water in front of God. Put a coconut on top of the Kalash. Tilak to Lord Kartikeya with Akshat, turmeric, sandalwood.

Then offer Panchamrit, fruits, dry fruits, flowers etc. to God and light a ghee lamp. Read the fasting story of Skanda Shashthi and perform aarti of Lord Skanda. Worshiping in this way on Skanda Shashthi removes all the troubles of the children and brings happiness and prosperity in the family.
