Veteran who took Tata Group to great heights passed away, Ratan Tata became emotional

RK Krishna Kumar Passes Away: RK Krishna Kumar, former director of Tata Sons and considered very close to Ratan Tata, died on January 1 at the age of 84 in Mumbai. Death occurred due to cardiac arrest. He was also a trustee of Sir Dorabji Tata Trust and Sir Ratan Tata Trust, which holds 66 per cent stake in Tata Sons.

RK Krishnakumar died of cardiac arrest at 6 pm on Sunday at his home. Tata Group officials said that his last rites will be performed on January 3 at 4.30 pm at the Chandanwadi cremation ground.

Krishnakumar was Ratan Tata’s confidant

Even after retiring from the post of director of Tata Sans, Krishnakumar remained involved with other things of the Tata group. He remained a member of the Tata Administrative Service and continued to work with Ratan Tata’s consultancy firm, RNT Associates, and other group trusts. Krishnakumar was considered very close and confidant of Ratan Tata.

Ratan Tata became emotional

Ratan Tata expressed grief over the death of Krishna Kumar and said that the departure of my friend and classmate RK Krishnakumar has caused great loss. It cannot be described in words. They can never be forgotten as a group and individually. Ratan Tata, Chairman, Tata Trusts, said that he was a stalwart of the Tata Group and Tata Trusts and will be missed by all.

Krishna Kumar was popularly known as KK

Krishnakumar was known as KK. He took many big decisions while being the director of Tata Sons. His contributions are best known for a number of Tata Group acquisitions, including the £271 million purchase of Tetley in 2000. Not only this, he has brought Tata Global Beverages to the second place in terms of tea manufacturers in the world. Also brought Tata Group and Bharat Inc to the top.

In 2009, the central government honored Kumar with the Padma Shri, the fourth highest civilian award, for his contribution to Indian business and industry. KK joined the Tata Group in 1963 from Presidency College, Chennai. His first posting was at Tata Industries and from there he worked in several Tata organizations – Tata Global Beverages and Tata Sons. Kumar headed the Indian Hotels Company from 1997 to 2002.
