UGC Issued Notice: The University Grants Commission (UGC) has released an important notice for PhD students. The notice has been issued to protect PhD students from being misled by advertisements of online PhD programs offered by Edutech companies in association with foreign educational institutions. The Commission has issued a notice in this regard saying that the students should not be misled by the advertisements of online programs by Edutech companies in association with any foreign educational institution as these online programs are not recognized by the UGC.
The commission already has its own procedure for awarding Ph.D degrees to the students. The PhD degree is awarded in accordance with the UGC (Minimum Standards and Procedure for Award of M.Phil/PhD Degree) Regulations, 2016. As per the notice, it is mandatory for all Indian Higher Educational Institutions (HEIs) to comply with the UGC rules and its amendments for grant of PhD degree.
UGC has shared this information on its official Twitter handle. The tweet read, UGC advises students not to be misled by advertisements for online PhD programs offered by edutech companies in association with foreign educational institutions. Please see attached public notice for more details.
M.Phil and PhD Ban from Open, Distance and Online Mode
The commission says that M.Phil and PhD programs in all subjects through open and distance learning and online mode are also banned. The higher education regulator said such online PhD programs are not recognized by the UGC. Earlier, the UGC had released a list of programs which are prohibited to be offered under Open and Distance Learning (ODL) and online mode.
