Twitter banned Indian Accounts: Twitter has banned 52,141 accounts in India between August 26 and September 25 on charges of child sexual abuse, non-consensual nudity and supporting terrorism. The micro-blogging platform, now owned by Elon Musk, also removed 1,982 accounts on its platform for promoting terrorism. Twitter, in its monthly report in compliance with the new IT Rules, 2021, said that it has received 157 complaints from users in India through its grievance redressal mechanism in a single time-frame and 129 of those URLs have been processed.
In addition, we took action on 43 complaints that were appealing for the ban of the Twitter account, Twitter said. All these were resolved and appropriate responses were sent. Twitter said, “After carefully reviewing the situation, we have not revoked the suspension of any of these accounts.” All accounts are suspended. Last month, Delhi Commission for Women chairperson Swati Maliwal had said that Twitter’s responses to child pornography complaints were incomplete and the commission was not satisfied with them.
Delhi Commission for Women had taken cognizance of child pornography
Maliwal had on September 20 summoned the Twitter India Policy Head and Delhi Police over tweets showing child pornography and rape videos of women and children on the micro-blogging platform. Taking suo motu cognizance of several tweets openly showing videos and images of sexual acts involving children, the commission said that most of the tweets showed children completely naked. Many of them depict rape and other non-consensual sexual activity of children and women.
The company said that it “does not tolerate any content that promotes child sexual abuse”. In the past, whether in direct messages or feeds, Musk has expressed serious concern over reports about the presence of child pornography tweets on Twitter. Under the new IT Rules 2021, large digital and social media platforms with more than 5 million users will have to issue monthly compliance reports.
