The company issued a statement today on July 7 saying that it has decided to temporarily remove tomatoes from its menu due to procurement difficulties. A McDonald’s India (North and East India) spokesperson said that due to seasonal issues, the food chain is unable to include tomatoes in its food menu.

However, it is clear that the prices of tomatoes are skyrocketing in the country and the reason for this is the heavy rains in many states. Due to this, the supply chain has been affected due to seasonal problems, from transportation to the quality of the crop, negative effects are being seen. In areas like Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata and Uttar Pradesh, the price of tomato has reached up to Rs 130-155 per kg.

McDonald’s India has mentioned in its entire statement that this is a temporary problem and the company is looking at all the ways through which tomatoes can be included back in its food menu as soon as possible. The company has also said that the brand has always been cautious about food quality and safety and for this reason tomatoes have to be removed from the food menu for the time being as they are not able to pass the company’s world class quality check.
