The early years of Jamsetji Tata’s life were spent in Gujarat and after that he came to Mumbai at the age of 14. Jamsetji Tata’s father’s name was Nusserwanji Tata. He graduated in Mumbai (then Bombay) and after that in the year 1868 he started his first business.
Started my own company in just Rs 21,000
After completing his studies, Jamsetji Tata went to England. After going there, he got information about the cloth trade. After this, he came to India and first started the textile business. After running this business for two years, he sold it at a good profit. After this he again went to England. After this, he understood the textile business better this time and started the Central India Spinning, Weaving and Manufacturing Company in Nagpur, Maharashtra at a cost of Rs 1.5 lakh. After this his business started. Due to the good yield of cotton in Nagpur, connection with the railway line, his business grew rapidly. After profit from this business, Jamsetji Tata hired a ship. This ship was hired at the rate of 1,050 pounds per month. After this he started a shipping company named Tata Line.
Establishment of many big institutions
Jamshedji Tata has also established many institutions like the country’s largest luxury hotel Taj Hotel, Tata Steel, IISC Bangalore. Along with this, he also established the first industrial city of India named Jamshedpur. India’s oldest steel plant Tata Steel was also established here. He built this city in a planned way. The city was built for the convenience and welfare of the employees working in the Tata Steel Plant. The planning of the city reflects much ahead of its time. Apart from this, he also established Tata Airlines which was later renamed Air India.
Tata Group does business in more than 100 countries
Tata Group is 157 years old and today the business of the company is spread in more than 100 countries. The total market cap of the company is $128 billion. More than 9.5 lakh people across the country get employment through this company. In the year 2020, Ratan Tata, chairman of Tata Sons, had said on Jamsetji’s birthday that he is like a lighthouse under whose light the Tata Group is flourishing.
