History of Chutney

The word chutney is derived from the Sanskrit word chatni, which means ‘to lick’. Chutney is said to have originated in India in the 17th century, when the Mughal emperor Shah Jahan was very ill, and his physician asked him to eat spicy foods so that his body could digest the food more easily. Then at the behest of Hakim, Shah Jahan’s cook mixed things like mint, coriander, cumin, real, garlic and dry ginger and grinded them well and prepared a chutney. He also added salt, chili and other spices to that chutney as per the requirement.

After tasting the chutney, Hakim asked to eat it in small quantity with food, because it had too much flavor of spices. After this incident, chutney was also served with other dishes.

Chutney must have been invented by mistake

Chutney may be mentioned during the 17th century, but historians and food experts believe that the method of making chutney by grinding it is even older. It is possible that chutney must have been made by our forefathers, because in those days they used to grind raw things and consume them after making a thick paste.

Today there are different types of chutney

Historians believe that chutney was invented by mistake or accident. Fruits and various spices are also used to make it. In India, it was specially eaten by the people of the Muslim class. Historians believe that in olden times soldiers were served tomato and papaya chutney with food. With the passage of time it must have been prevalent in different states of India. However, with the passage of time, people started making chutney in different ways, in which they started adding dry fruits etc. along with spices.
