Maharashtra Farmer Sells 512 kg Onion : If you are a farmer, and go to another city to sell your crop, then you must read this news. A farmer is handed over a check of only Rs 2 on his crop by the trader of the market committee. How would you feel if this happened to you? You can call it system deficiencies or crop failure. Something similar happened with a farmer named Rajendra Tukaram Chavan (58 years) from Borgaon village in Barshi taluka of Solapur district of Maharashtra. Learn about the case in detail…
70 km journey to sell onions
According to the Times of India, farmer Rajendra Tukaram Chavan traveled 70 kilometers to sell 512 kg of onions. They reached Solapur APMC after covering such a distance. Where he had to sell his produce at just Re 1 per kg due to the falling prices of onions. The APMC trader deducted Rs 509.50 towards transportation charges, head-loading and weighing charges etc. from the total amount of Rs 512. After this, Chavan’s net profit has been barely Rs 2.49 and he has also been given a post-dated check of Rs 2. He can take its payment after 15 days. The balance of 49 paise was not shown in the cheque, as bank transactions are usually rounded off. Now the farmer will have to take the remaining amount directly from the trader.
Postdated check given for Rs.2
Due to the bumper crop, the country’s largest onion producing areas have fallen drastically in Maharashtra. Farmer Tukaram says that, last year the price of 2022 was good, so he sold onions at Rs.20 per kg. What is the reason behind issuing a postdated check for Rs 2 to Tukaram.
this is the biggest reason
Nasir Khalifa, the businessman of Solapur APMC, says that now the whole process has become computerized. Due to this the check has to be issued. However, this time the quality of onions that Tukaram had brought was very low. When he had brought high quality onion, its price was Rs 18 per kg. Then brought another onion, and got the price of Rs 14 per kg. Farmers get good quality only in 25 percent of the crop. About 30 percent of the crop is of medium quality. The rest of the level remains low.
