Indian Wrestlers on Protest: Many Indian women and men wrestlers, including Bajrang Punia, Vinesh Phogat and Sakshi Malik, were on strike since morning against the Wrestling Federation of India (WFI). This protest started at Jantar Mantar. In the beginning, it was not clear what the protest was about, but in the press conference at 4 pm, the Indian wrestlers spoke openly. During this, Vinesh Phogat and other veteran wrestlers accused Indian Wrestling Association President Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh of sexual harassment.
Vinesh Phogat said, ‘WFI President has sexually harassed many women wrestlers and coaches. I am saying this today but I do not know whether I will be alive tomorrow or not. Some of the women wrestlers who are sitting here with me have also become victims of this molestation. We are not fighting for us, we are fighting to save wrestling.
There were many more allegations.
- Vinesh Phogat said, coaches torture us daily. Wrestler cannot even drink water without the permission of the coach.
- Bajrang Punia said, wrestlers do not get any help from sponsors. The financial help which should reach the wrestlers does not reach them.
- Bajrang Punia said, there has been a protest against the Indian Wrestling Federation since a long time, but the wrestlers who protest are tortured. No one can say anything against the President of the Wrestling Federation of India.
- Vinesh Phogat said, I was mentally harassed by the WFI President. I started having thoughts of suicide. Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh has been a four-time MP. He is very powerful. Whenever there is a complaint against them, we get death threats if we go straight.
- Bajrang Punia said, till the time the President of Wrestling Federation of India Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh is not removed, we will continue the protest.
