Sri Lanka beat Ireland: Sri Lanka defeated Ireland in the Super-12 round of T20 World Cup 2022 (T20 WC 2022). Batting first, Ireland scored 128 runs for the loss of 8 wickets. In reply, Sri Lanka won the match by 9 wickets with 5 overs remaining. Opener Kusal Mendis was the ‘Player of the Match’.
Ireland captain Andy Balbirnie won the toss and elected to bat first. His decision proved to be wrong and in the second over, he returned to the pavilion after scoring just one run. As soon as the captain returned to the pavilion, wickets kept falling at regular intervals. Opener Paul Stirling played a brilliant innings of 34 runs off 25 balls. Harry Tector also scored 45 runs. He faced 42 balls for this. Apart from these two, no other Irish batsman could stay on the pitch for long.
Lorcan Tucker (10), Curtis Kemper (2), George Dockrell (14), Gerath Dillaney (9), Mark Eder (0) returned cheaply to the pavilion. Simi Singh (7) and Barry McCarthy (2) remained unbeaten. Wanindu Hasaranga and Mahish Teekshana took 2-2 wickets for Sri Lanka. Binura Fernando, Lahiru, Chamika and Dhananjay de Silva got 1-1 wickets.
Sri Lanka won in 15 overs
Sri Lanka had no problem in achieving this small target. Openers Kusal Mendis and Dhananjay de Silva added 63 runs for the first wicket in 8.2 overs. After the dismissal of Dhananjaya (31), Kusal Mendis along with Charith Aslanka gave Sri Lanka an easy victory. Kusal Mendis played an unbeaten innings of 68 runs off 43 balls. At the same time, Charith Aslanka scored 31 runs in 22 balls. With this win, Sri Lanka has reached the second position in Group 1. New Zealand occupies the first position.
