T20 World Cup 2022: Afghanistan’s team has been out of the race to reach the semi-finals of the T20 World Cup 2022. In the match held in Brisbane on Tuesday, it was defeated by Sri Lanka by 6 wickets. Batting first, Afghanistan scored 144 runs for the loss of 8 wickets. In reply, Sri Lanka achieved the target in the 19th over for the loss of 4 wickets.
Afghan captain Mohammad Nabi won the toss and elected to bat first. The Afghan opening pair added 42 runs for the first wicket in 6.1 overs. Rahmanullah Gurbaz returned to the pavilion after scoring 28 runs off 24 balls. After him, Usman Ghani (27) was also dismissed soon. Ibrahim Zadran (22) and Najibullah Zadran (18) played short innings. After these Gulbadin Naib (12) and Mohammad Nabi (13) carried forward the Afghan innings.
Afghan batsmen played average innings but the run rate remained slow. This was the reason that the entire Afghan team could only score 144 runs in the stipulated 20 overs. Wanindu Hasaranga took three wickets for Sri Lanka. Lahiru Kumara also sent two Afghan batsmen to the pavilion. Kasun Rajita and Dhananjay de Silva got 1-1 wickets.
Sri Lanka achieved the target easily
Chasing the target of 145 runs, Sri Lanka had a poor start and opener Pathum Nisanka was dismissed after scoring 10 runs off 10 balls. From here Kusal Mendis (25) and Dhananjay de Silva carried the innings forward. Dhananjay de Silva remained unbeaten till the last on 66 off 42 balls. Apart from these, Charith Aslanka scored 19 and Bhanuka Rajapaksa scored 18 runs. Rashid Khan and Mujibur Rahman took 2-2 wickets for Afghanistan.
After the victory over Afghanistan, Sri Lanka’s team has reached the third position in Group 1. The team has 4 points in 4 matches. At present, this team remains in the race for the semi-finals.
