T20 Cricket: Test format is given the highest status in cricket. But do fans like to watch Test cricket? The answer is probably not. But why so? This is because the audience likes to watch T20 cricket more. The shortest format played in international cricket is liked all over the world. T20 cricket has helped the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) become the richest cricket board in the world today.
T20 World Cup to be held this year
It is worth noting that this year the eighth edition of the T20 World Cup is to be played. This T20 world to be played in Australia will start from 16 October, in which the Indian team will play its first match against Pakistan on 23 October in Melbourne. Let us tell you that before the start of T20 cricket, the condition of BCCI was not so good.
There was no money for the World Cup winning team
In the year 1975, the BCCI used to pay a fee of 2500 rupees to the players of the team to play a test match. After this, the Indian team won the first ODI World Cup in the year 1983. Even after winning the World Cup, the Indian team did not have enough money to give it to its players. After this, famous singer Lata Mangeshkar arranged a show to give money to the players and whatever money came from it was distributed among the players.
There was no money to show the match on TV
The condition of the BCCI was so bad that they did not have the money to show the match of the Indian team on TV. After the 1983 World Cup, there was some increase in the earnings of the board and BCCI used to pay a fee of Rs 5 lakh to Doordarshan for showing the match on TV.
How T20 cricket changed the condition of BCCI
TV rights were sold for the first time in the year 1991, after which the BCCI got stronger and the board which had the status of lakhs reached crores. In about 15 years, this process gradually went from crores to few hundred crores. This was followed by the introduction of T20 cricket, which made BCCI the world’s richest board and cricket as the most preferred sport after football.
Now Brocaster gives money to BCCI
There was a time when BCCI used to pay a fee of Rs 5 lakh to Doordarshan to show India’s match on TV. But time took such a turn that now the broadcaster himself gives Rs 43.20 crore to BCCI for a match to be held in India. This game got worldwide recognition from T20 cricket.
Cricket got worldwide recognition
The first test match in the history of cricket was played in the year 1877. But even today only 12 countries play Test cricket and its reach is not very big. Whereas, Test is considered to be the best format of cricket. At the same time, more people adopted cricket from ODIs and 25 countries became the players of ODI cricket. But T20 cricket left its own mark. At present, T20 cricket is played in a total of 95 countries.
T20 is the only format, due to which cricket got so much recognition and today it has become the second most liked sport in the world. Before cricket, people used to give preference to hockey, but now hockey has come at number three. There are currently 350 million football fans in the world. After this, cricket is present at number two with 250 crore fans, hockey with 200 crore fans at number three, tennis with 100 crore fans at number four and volleyball with 90 crore fans at number five.
Cricket turned into a professional sport
Any sport becomes number one when it becomes a professional sport and the franchise league makes any sport professional. Like other sports, the IPL got this position for cricket. After the arrival of IPL, there was an increase of about 10 times in the earnings from BCCI to ICC. Till the year 2008-17, its TV rights remained with Sony Network, which bought them for 8200 crores. After this, till the year 2018-23, Star Sports bought its rights for 16,347 crores. Recently, till the year 2023-27, once again Star Sports bought the broadcasting rights of IPL for 48,359.52.
At the same time, there was a significant increase in its viewership as well. According to the data taken from BARC India, the viewership of IPL is 10.2 crores in the year 2008, 12.3 crores in the year 2009, 14.4 crores in the year 2010, 16 crores in 2011, 16.3 crores in the year 2012, 176 crores in the year 2013, In the year 2014 19 crores, 19.2 crores in 2015, 36.1 crores in 2016, 40 crores in 2017, 408 crores in 2018, 462 crores in 2019 and 2020 and saw some decline. The viewership of both the years was 40.5 and 41 crores respectively.
Will cricket be able to wake up in the Olympics?
The Olympics is the biggest sports event in the world. Cricket has been included in this event only once. Cricket had become a part of this event for the first and last time so far in the Summer Olympics held in Paris in 1900. It takes a long time for a cricket match to take place and very few countries play cricket, so it is kept away from the Olympics. Now a lot of things have changed since the arrival of T20 cricket and it is expected that cricket will be included in the Olympics to be held in Los Angeles, USA in the year 2028, the ICC is engaged in this effort.
