What is Addison’s disease?
Addison’s disease is an autoimmune disease. This disease is very serious and dangerous. The doctor says that this disease usually occurs in women and in most cases occurs when the immune system is weak. This disease takes a heavy toll on health because both the hormones are very important for humans. The hormone cortisol helps the body deal with stress. It maintains the level of blood pressure in the body. Aldosterone balances the sodium and potassium levels in the blood and the latter regulates kidney function.
Is There a Connection Between Addison’s Disease and Heart Attacks?
Addison’s patients are prone to cardiovascular disease due to chronic cortisol deficiency in the body. Cortisol is a hormone that regulates immune system levels and inflammation, and its deficiency can lead to imbalances in these systems, which can lead to high blood pressure, high cholesterol, and atherosclerosis, a risk factor for heart disease. Individuals with Addison’s disease have to undergo proper hormone replacement therapy. Regular check-ups and lifestyle can play an important role in monitoring heart health.
