This Jyotirlinga is located in Veraval port of Saurashtra region of Gujarat. This is the first Jyotirlinga among the 12 Jyotirlingas of India. Its glory is described in Mahabharata, Shrimad Bhagwat, Skanda Purana and Rigveda. Somnath temple is the center of faith of innumerable devotees. There is a mythological belief about the Somnath temple that it was built by Chandradev himself. It is mentioned in Rigveda.

In the south direction of this temple, there are very attractive pillars on the sea shore. Which are called Baan Stambh, on which an arrow has been placed on top of which it has been shown that no part of the land exists between the Somnath temple and the South Pole. This is a wonderful evidence of ancient Indian knowledge. It is believed that Lord Shri Krishna left his body at this place.
Mythology of Somnath Temple
According to Skanda Purana, Moon had married 27 daughters of Daksha, but his love for only one Rohini was immense. Because of this, the remaining twenty-six queens started feeling neglected and humiliated. He complained about this to his father. Seeing the pain of the daughters, King Daksha tried to convince Chandra Dev, but he did not agree. On this, King Daksha cursed the moon to die slowly.
In order to get rid of this curse, the moon did severe penance to Lord Shiva in Prabhas Kshetra on the behest of Brahmadev. Chandra Dev established the Shivling and worshiped it. Pleased with the harsh penance of the moon, Lord Shiva freed him from the curse and gave him the boon of immortality. Because of this curse and boon, the moon keeps increasing for 15 days and decreases for 15 days.
It is said that after getting rid of the curse, the moon prayed to Lord Shiva to stay in the Shivling made by him and since then this Shivling started being worshiped in Somnath Jyotirlinga. It is believed that seeing and worshiping Someshwar Jyotirlinga frees one from all sins. This place is also known as ‘Prabhas Pattan’.
