How Holi started in Ayodhya

Holi festival is an integral part of Indian tradition. Its beginning is mainly believed to be after an incident in the Satyuga period, which is related to devotee Prahlad and his aunt Holika, and to commemorate this, every year on the eve of Holi, Holika Dahan is done at the crossroads. This story related to Holi is very popular. But do you know that the beginning of the tradition of Holi is also linked to Maharaja Raghu, a descendant of Lord Shri Ram, a religious and scholar of Ayodhya, according to which the tradition of Holi is considered to have started in Tretayuga.

Mythological belief of Holi associated with Ayodhya in Treyayuga

It is said that Maharaja Raghu, a descendant of Lord Shriram, started the tradition of Holika to kill a demonic nuisance during his reign. In fact, during the time of Maharaja Raghu in the Treta period, there was a demon named Dhundha. His nuisance and atrocities had increased so much that all the people were distressed.

Then Maharaja Raghu asked Guru Vashisht about the solution to get rid of the demon. Guru Vashishtha told Maharaja Raghu that, if the fire is done at the square-crossroads, then his nuisance will automatically be calm. According to Guru’s advice, Maharaja Raghu got this information spread throughout the city. After this, the youth collected wood at all the intersections and burnt it and the nuisance of that demonic came to an end. Since then the tradition of Holika Dahan is considered to have started.

Laxman ji got this right on the day of Holi

A folk tale is very popular about Holi in Ayodhya. According to this, on the day of Holi, Lakshman ji got the right to serve the feet of Shri Ram. Lakshman ji used to serve the feet of his elder brother Lord Shri Ram. But when mother Sita came to Ayodhya after marrying Ramji, then the right to serve her feet also became hers. In such a situation, Lakshman ji used to wander outside the room. Because of this Laxman ji started feeling sad and his body started drying up due to not getting service at the Lord’s feet.

One day Ramji asked Laxman the reason for his being sad and dry. Then Laxman said – Lord, Mother Sita neither tells me but does not even call me inside. I will not be able to live without your feet service. Ramji said – She is my wife and thus she has the first right. Then Lakshman ji asked Shriram to tell some solution.

Ramji said – There is a solution. Holi festival is going to come after four days. It is a custom in Raghukul that on this day the brother-in-law plays Holi with the sister-in-law and in the evening whatever the brother-in-law demands from the sister-in-law in the presence of the elders, the sister-in-law has to give it. After playing Holi on the day of Holi, when you go to ask Sita in the evening, fulfill your wish.

Laxman was pleased with Ramji’s trick and started eagerly waiting for Holi. Four days were over and Holi came. Laxman, Bharat and Shatrughan played Holi with Sitaji with complete purity. As soon as the evening came, everyone reached to Sitaji to touch her feet. After Bharat and Shatrughan, it was Laxman’s turn. Laxman touched the feet of Mother Sita. Sita ji asked Laxman to ask for something as a blessing, then Laxman said – ‘Mother! I don’t want any other gift for Holi, only the right to serve the feet of Shri Ram should be mine.’

Sitaji fainted on hearing this. Because it was her right to serve the feet of Lord Ram and by giving this right to Laxman ji, she could not break her promise of being the daughter-in-law of Raghuvansh. Lakshman ji ran to Shri Ram and told about Mother Sita. Shriram told a trick to Laxman, after hearing which he reached to Sitaji and said in her ear, Mother! Both of us should divide the rights of Charan Seva. My right foot and your left foot. When you go to serve the Lord’s feet, invite me also. Hearing this, Sita ji’s unconsciousness ended and on the auspicious day of Holi, Lakshman ji got the right to serve the feet of the Lord.
