International Day of Forests 2023, Importance of Forest in Hinduism: Every year March 21 is celebrated as International Forest Day across the world. Meaning- As long as there are forests rich in wildlife on the earth, till then the earth will continue to nurture the human race.
According to the Udyogaparva of Mahabharata- Nasya dwan mrity vyaghran vyaghran syurrite vanam. Vanhi Rakshati Vyaghra Vyaghran Rakshati Kananam.
Meaning- without tigers the forest cannot be protected and without the forest the tigers also cannot live. Because tigers protect the forest and forests protect the tigers.
In the Matsya Purana, while comparing a tree with the ten sons of a man, it is said-
Dashkoop Sama Vapi, Dashavapi Samo Hridah.
Dashahad Samah Putro Dashaputra Samoththam.
According to sages and sages – the basis of the earth is water and forest. That’s why water and forest have been considered important to protect the earth. Describing the forest as blissful, the sages have said- ‘Aranya Te Prithvi Sayonamastu’, In the important ashrams of Hinduism, Brahmacharya, Vanprastha and Sannyas are also directly related to the forest.

Saints and sages all went towards the forest.
Sages-saints and sages-muni all went towards the forest for chanting-penance and search of knowledge because they wanted solitude. He could attain spiritual energy only by living in solitude. Not only in mythological times, but also in modern times, many saints and yogis live in mountains and forests for penance.
Buddha also attained enlightenment in the forest
Lord Gautam Buddha, the founder of Buddhism, also left the worldly and family attachment and went to the forest. After years of hard penance, he attained divine knowledge under the Bodhi tree.
