Tagore was the first non-European to receive the Nobel Prize for Literature. Although Tagore did not accept this Nobel Prize directly, rather a British ambassador took the prize in his place. Tagore was also awarded the title of ‘Knight Hood’ i.e. ‘Sir’ by the British Government, but Tagore returned this title after the Jallianwala Bagh incident in 1919.
