Speaking to PTI, grandmasters Divya Deshmukh, D Gukesh, and Tania Sachdev stated their happiness, and that they delivered as per the need of the hour to guide India to a historic gold.
“I think the prize distribution was iconic for us, I think I played well under pressure, I am really proud of the way I played in the penultimate round. All of my teammates are so inspiring, especially the men’s team, each one of them is so strong. We did not have fear of failure, this generation won’t stop without a gold, I am really proud of that,” said Divya Deshmukh.
“The Olympiad performance in Budapest was a historical one, I am super happy with how I personally played and how the team managed to play together and showed the strength of our country. Last time, both men and women, we won bronze, which is a good result as we could have got gold, it was disappointing, we had to wait, and we showed what it means to us and what we have been doing and I am super happy,” said D Gukesh.
The Grandmaster also added that the Women’s team, inspite of early jitters, ended up performing extremely well.
“We were all in great form, and we dominated from the start, but the women had to really endure after two setbacks against Poland and the US. I am really happy for the seniors, especially Harika and Tania, they have been a lot of Olympiad, I am super happy,” he added.
“It’s really been, probably the most important moment of my career, this had been my dream since I made it to the national team in 2008, my first Chess Olympics. We came close many times, in the 2022 Olympiad, we were really close, we won a historic bronze, we were close to gold. I thought that I was last time in the team, and I had made peace with it. So this moment means so much to me, and I could not have imagined a better day, having the men team alongside us, having our Indian flag winning gold twice, we truly felt iconic, and the love that we received from everyone, it’s been overwhelming,” said Tania Sachdev.
