The Inspirational Story of Buddha and Chakshupal
Once Mahatma Gautam Buddha was in Jetavana Vihara. Then monk Chakshupal had come to meet him. On hearing the news of Chakshupal’s arrival, discussions about his daily routine, behavior and qualities etc. started. The monk Chaksupala was blind.
When monk Chaksupala came to Jetavana Vihara, one day some monks of Buddha found some dead insects outside Chaksupala’s hermitage. After this he started condemning Chakshupal. As soon as the monk started saying, he has killed these living beings. Then Lord Buddha called all the blasphemer monks. Buddha asked whether you have seen monk Chaksupala killing these insects. The monks answered no.
Then Lord Buddha told him that, just as you did not see Chakshupal killing insects, similarly Chakshupal also never saw those insects dying. Chakshupal has not killed those insects intentionally. That’s why it is not appropriate to condemn or condemn them in such a way. Then the monks asked the Buddha that how did the monk Chaksupala become blind? Did he commit any sins in this birth or in the previous birth.
Buddha told the monks about Chakshupal and said that he was a doctor in his previous birth. A blind woman had lost after getting medical treatment everywhere. No one could heal his eyes. Then he got his eyes treated by Chakshupal and he promised Chakshupal that if he would restore his eyesight, he and his entire family would become slaves of monk Chakshupal. With the treatment of Chakshupal, that woman’s eyes were completely cured. But in the end she refused to keep the promise she had made for fear of becoming a slave.
Chakshupal who was a doctor, he knew that the woman’s eyes were cured and she was lying. But to teach her a lesson and to take revenge, Chakshupal deliberately gave her such a medicine that the woman became blind again. That woman felt remorse for her actions and cried a lot. But even then Chakshupal did not have any mercy on him and as a result of this sin, Chakshupal had to become blind in the next birth i.e. in this birth.
