Former United States House Speaker Nancy Pelosi confirmed her candidacy for another term in the US Congress on Friday, pledging to continue her political journey as Democrats aim to regain the majority in the 2024 elections. At the age of 83, Pelosi made her announcement in front of her labor allies in the San Francisco district she has faithfully represented for over 35 years, according to news agency Associated Press.

“Now more than ever, our City needs us to advance San Francisco values and further our recovery,” Pelosi stated in a post on X, formerly Twitter. “Our country needs America to show the world that our flag is still there, with liberty and justice for ALL. That is why I am running for reelection — and respectfully ask for your vote,” she added.

Having been first elected to Congress in 1987, Pelosi’s political career has been marked by historic milestones. She made history by becoming the first female Speaker of the US House in 2007, and in 2019, she regained the speaker’s gavel.

Throughout her tenure, Pelosi has led the Democratic Party through a series of significant legislative accomplishments, including the passage of the Affordable Care Act. She has also navigated through turbulent times, overseeing two impeachments of former President Donald Trump.

Pelosi’s decision to seek re-election dispels any speculation of retirement for the veteran leader. With the honorific title of speaker emeritus, she remains a prominent and influential figure within the Democratic Party, serving as a key leader and a formidable fundraiser for Democratic causes.

Kevin McCarthy, 57, was elected as the House Speaker in a historic post-midnight 15th ballot in January this year. He won the gavel after 15 rounds of voting, making it the longest election for speaker. The longest vote in US history took place in 1855, lasting 133 rounds over two months.
