The holy festival of Chaitra Navratri is being celebrated with great pomp and devotion across the country. There is importance of worshiping different forms of Maa Durga for the whole nine days in Navratri. On the first day of Navratri Maa Shailputri, on the second day Maa Brahmacharini, on the third day Maa Chandraghanta, on the fourth day Maa Kushmanda, on the fifth day Maa Skandamata and on the sixth day Maa Katyayani were worshipped. Now on Tuesday, March 28, 2023, the seventh day of Navratri, Maa Kalaratri, the seventh form of Maa Durga, will be worshipped. Worshiping Maa Kalratri destroys the demonic powers and the wicked. The appearance of Maa Kalratri is frightening and the color of Maa is absolutely black like the dense darkness of her name. The hair of his head is disheveled and the mother has worn a bright garland like electricity around her neck. Maa Kalratri has three eyes, which are as round as the universe. Mother’s ride is Gardabha i.e. donkey. The upper right hand of the mother has Vara Mudra, the bottom right hand has Abhaya Mudra. There is an iron fork in the left hand and a sword in the bottom hand. The demonic powers are destroyed by the worship of Maa Kalratri and demons, ghosts, vampires and demons all go away even by her name.
Story of Maa Kaalratri
According to the legend, a demon named Raktabeej had created hue and cry all around. Everyone from humans to gods were troubled by his terror. Raktabeej had such a boon that as soon as a drop of his blood fell on the earth, another powerful demon like him would be created. In this way the army of Raktabeej kept on getting ready and its terror also increased. Distressed by Raktabeej, all the deities reached Lord Shiva. Shiv ji knew that only mother Parvati can end the Raktabeej. That’s why he requested Mother Parvati. Then Mother Parvati created Mother Kalaratri with her power and brilliance.
The form of Maa Kalratri was fierce and ferocious. Neck riding, black colour, open hair, garland around the neck, one hand in groom posture, one hand in abhaya posture, iron fork in one hand and sword in one hand. While killing Raktabeej, Maa Kalratri drank the drop of blood coming out of his body before it fell on the ground and in this way the mother freed humans and gods from the terror of Raktabeej. This form of Maa is also known as Kalaratri and Kalika.
