Lord Shiva does not like this fruit

While worshiping Lord Shiva, many types of fruits like ber, mango, banana, nibouli, badri ber and dhatura fruit etc. are offered on the Shivling. But even by mistake, coconut should not be offered on the Shivling while worshiping on the day of Mahashivaratri, nor should coconut water be used to anoint the Shivling. The reason for this is that, Coconut is also called Shreefal and it is considered as the form of Mata Lakshmi and Mata Lakshmi is the half of Lord Vishnu. On the other hand, usually when we offer fruits to God in worship, we take them later as Prasad. But the substances with which anointing is done on the Shivling are not accepted. It is believed that if coconut fruit or coconut water is offered to Shivling, then it is not acceptable. Along with this, Shivji also gets angry.

According to Shivpuran, along with coconut fruit or coconut water, Ketaki flowers, Tulsi leaves, Halki, Kumkum and vermilion etc. should never be offered on Shivling.
