5G Scammers: The rollout of 5G services has started in India. Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced the launch of 5G network on 2nd October. Both Airtel and Reliance Jio have started the rollout of 5G service in select Indian cities and are likely to cover the entire country by 2024. Although there are many benefits of 5G, but a few days after its announcement, fraud has started in the name of 5G service. In the name of 5G, users are becoming victims of scammers. Police in many states have issued alerts regarding 5G scams and warned smartphone users about 5G-related scams. We will tell you here what you have to do and what not to take 5G service. 

5G service will not be available in these ways

avoid links received over SMS, text messages, WhatsApp or emails

Scammers are promising users to update their phones through links sent over SMS, WhatsApp and email. Both Airtel and Reliance Jio are sending alerts to their users and users are being asked not to click on any text message (SMS) or email asking to upgrade your SIM card from 4G to 5G. Having said. These links are malware and can be used to vacate your bank account.

Your phone cannot remotely start 5G 

Remember that no one can remotely start 5G on your phone. Do not reply or share personal information and OTPs with anyone claiming to remotely activate 5G on your phone. For 5G services, rely only on the official app of your telecom operator. Don’t download any app that claims to enable 5G on your phone.

In a city where 5G services are not yet started

You cannot get 5G in a city where 5G services have not been started yet. Wait for your telecom service provider to launch 5G in your city. Airtel has rolled out 5G in eight cities namely Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai, Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Siliguri, Nagpur and Varanasi, while Jio has started beta testing in Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata and Varanasi.

You will need a 5G-enabled phone to run a 5G network on your phone. No one can upgrade your 4G phone to 5G phone. Beware of fraudsters offering to make your 4G phone 5G enabled. Remember, no software update or app upgrades a 4G phone to a 5G phone. 

In these ways 5G service will start in your phone

via OTA update

You can get 5G through over-the-air updates issued by your smartphone company or telecom service provider. Some phones may require a change in the Settings section to enable 5G. iPhone maker Apple has said that 5G will be enabled for iPhone users in December through a software update.  Samsung and Google are also planning to do the same. Xiaomi said that it has started rolling out FOTA (firmware over-the-air) updates for select devices like Xiaomi 12 Pro 5G and Mi 11X Pro.

5G network will be available on your existing 4G SIM card

Smartphone users do not need a new SIM to run 5G. Both Airtel and Reliance Jio have said that their 4G SIMs are 5G-enabled. So, don’t fall for scammers who offer to upgrade your 4G SIM to 5G.

Push notification from telecom operator to enable 5G

You can enable 5G on your phone through push notification from your telecom service provider. But remember, this push notification will never come via text message, WhatsApp or email. This will be sent through their official app only. 

5G on your existing mobile plan 

Smartphone users do not need to pay much money to use 5G service right now. Both Airtel and Reliance Jio have said that 5G services will be provided at the same price as the existing plan of the users. The companies have said that customers will only pay for their existing 4G plan and will not be charged extra for 5G data during the trial.
