Mithali Raj On Jhulan Goswami Retirement: India’s most successful female cricketer and former captain Mithali Raj has made a big statement about fast bowler Jhulan Goswami playing her last international match against England on Saturday. Apart from this, Mithali also shared an interesting anecdote related to Jhulan.
India’s prolific women’s batsman Mithali Raj, who retired from cricket in July, welcomed the great fast bowler Jhulan to the ‘Club of Former Cricketers’. Jhulan is playing her farewell match against England at Lord’s on Saturday.
Mithali and Jhulan, who have shared a ‘dressing room’ together for two decades, have witnessed the development of women’s cricket in India, both have been partners in memorable victories and both have seen some bad defeats as well.
Talking to news agency PTI on Jhulan’s infinite impact, playing long hours and tireless work of so many years, Mithali said, we are our age, so we both would have been very comfortable and our conversation would have been like this. It was very easy to talk to them. She was always full of energy on the field, probably because she is a fast bowler.
‘I would often tell him on the net, why do you spew so much fire in bowling’
Jhulan (39 years) became the highest wicket-taker in ODIs due to his tireless dedication. Although ‘swing’ was not her biggest weapon, but with her precise bowling and excellent use of seam, she was able to bag so many wickets.
Mithali recalled that her competitive spirit was visible in the nets as well. She said, ‘I would often tell him on the net, why do you spew so much fire in bowling (bowling aggressively), after all I am your partner, am I not? Then she would say, getting you out is the most difficult. She was always competitive, even in domestic cricket, where we often played against each other. I used to enjoy this rivalry as well.
A fast bowler is expected to be tough from outside but Jhulan is very soft hearted from inside. Mithali told the incident of a match in domestic cricket in which this side of Jhulan is visible.
Mithali narrated an interesting anecdote related to Jhulan
Mithali said, we were playing in the semi-final (Railways vs Bengal). I don’t carry a helmet in the domestic season. Jhulan was aiming at my head and I had dropped several bouncers to him. After a while she came to me and said, why are you not wearing a helmet? I said, if I don’t bring a helmet, how will I wear it?’ Those were fun days too.
The former India captain said that the rivals also had full respect for her, especially when she was at her peak. He said, his precise bowling set him apart. She was not such a good bowler in swing, she could bowl the ball in and out. The cutter ball was his strength. When she was at her peak, she never used to bowl loose balls.
Mithali and Jhulan started playing together at a time when women’s cricket was largely ignored. But after coming under the BCCI (Cricket Board of India) in 2006, it started changing.
