IPL 2023 Auction Highlights: The auction for IPL 2023 was held in Kochi on Friday. A total of 87 slots were vacant in all the 10 teams before the auction, but a total of 80 players were sold during the auction. To buy these players, all the teams spent a total of Rs 167 crore in the auction. England’s star all-rounder Sam Curran got the highest price in this.
Sam Curran was bought by Punjab Kings for Rs 18.50 crore. After this, Cameron Green of Australia was the second highest selling player. Green was joined by Mumbai Indians for Rs 17.50 crore. At the same time, Ben Stokes of England was sold for Rs 16.25 crore. Stokes was bought by Chennai Super Kings.
A total of 29 foreign and 51 Indian players were sold in this auction. For the first time, four players got more than 15 crores in the auction. However, Yuvraj Singh’s record still stands.
Yuvraj Singh’s record maintained
Even though players like Sam Curran, Cameron Green, Ben Stokes and Nicholas Pooran got hefty sums, but India’s Yuvraj Singh’s record still stood. Yuvraj Singh is still the most expensive batsman sold in the auction. He was bought by Delhi in 2015 for Rs 16 crore. At the same time, Harry Brook has come at number two in the list of most expensive batsmen. He was bought by Sunrisers Hyderabad for Rs 13.25 crore.
England players took 33% of the auction amount
A total of Rs 167 crore was spent in the IPL 2023 auction. Out of this, 56.4 crore rupees went to the account of England players alone. This was 33% of the total amount spent. Indian players also did not get this much amount. English players sold for Rs 56.4 crore. Sam Karan (18.5 crores), Ben Stokes (16.25 crores) and Harry Brook (13.25 crores) were the costliest English players.
A lot of money was looted on players under 25
This time the IPL franchisees looted a lot of money on the youth. Rs 71.1 crore was spent on 27 players under the age of 25. Means Rs 2.63 crore was spent per player. 28 players were sold in the age group of 25 to 29. 38.9 crore rupees were spent on these 28 players. Means 1.39 crore was spent per player here. The franchisees spent 51.5 crores on 20 players in the age group of 30 to 34. Here the average per player was 2.58 crores. Whereas 5 players aged 35+ were sold for 5.5 crores. The average price per player of this age category was 1.10 crores.
Ireland and Namibia player sold for the first time
Irish fast bowler Joshua Little was bought by Gujarat Titans for Rs 4.40 crore. His base price was Rs 50 lakh. He has become the first player from Ireland to get a contract in IPL.
At the same time David Weiss of Namibia was also successful in getting the bid. This time he came to the auction as a Namibian player. Namibian player has been sold for the first time in IPL. Although, he has played in IPL before, but then he used to play international cricket for South Africa.
Zimbabwe player returns to IPL
Zimbabwe’s experienced player Sikandar Raza was bought by Punjab Kings in the auction. Punjab took Raza for his base price of Rs 50 lakh. He has become the third player from his country to participate in IPL. Earlier Kolkata bought Tatenda Taibu and Sunrisers Hyderabad bought Brendan Taylor.
