Irani Cup 2022: The clash between Saurashtra and Rest of India in the final of the Irani Cup is going to start from Saturday. In the final, all eyes will be on Indian team’s star batsman Cheteshwar Pujara. Apart from this, five openers have been given place for the final match in the rest of India’s team.
Madhya Pradesh is the 2021-22 Ranji Trophy champion but Saurashtra is playing this match of Irani Trophy due to being the 2019-20 champion. Due to the Kovid-19 epidemic, this match could not be held for two consecutive seasons. Gone are the days when the Rest of India vs Ranji Champions match was like a national team trial match and a good performance here was considered a surety of a place for the national team.
The Irani Cup 2022 is an opportunity for players trying to make a place in the national team to stay relevant. Most of the players who were part of the recent A series against New Zealand have got a place in the team.
Saurashtra’s team has experienced Test players in Pujara who would like to strengthen their claim in the team before the series in Bangladesh. Pujara did well for Sussex in both red-ball and white-ball List A but it remains to be seen whether the selectors will stick with him in the Test match.
Will also keep an eye on the openers
The opening problem for the rest of India is the plethora of openers who are all in pretty good form. Five openers have got a place in the team. India A’s opening pair of Priyank Panchal and Abhimanyu Easwaran did well against New Zealand A while Yashasvi Jaiswal scored 265 runs in the final in the Duleep Trophy.
Apart from this, there is Test opener Mayank Agarwal who is trying to make a comeback in the national team. Young Yash Dhul is also part of the team which scored 770 runs in five first-class matches in his debut season. Apart from wicketkeeper Kona Bharat, only captain Hanuma Vihari and in-form Sarfaraz Khan are the two specialist batsmen in the team.
Saurashtra’s bowling attack will be led by Jaydev Unadkat. The team also has Chetan Sakariya who can bring the ball inside for the right-handed batsmen. From the third day on the slow batting surface, the role of spinners of both the teams can be important.
