The stock market has seen ups and downs in the last month, but despite this, the number of people opening demat accounts has increased. According to the PTI report, the number of newly opened accounts in January has been more than the previous four months. However, even now these figures are less than the average run rate of 29 lakhs for 2021-22.
How many accounts were opened in January
According to analysis by Motilal Oswal Financial Services, the number of newly opened accounts stood at 2.2 million in January. It was 21 lakhs in December and 20 lakhs each in September, October and November. According to statistics, the number of demat accounts increased to 11 crore in January. In January 2022, this figure was 8.4 percent. The number of demat accounts has increased by 31 percent on an annual basis.
Why the number of equity investments increased
Experts believe that the main reason for the increase in demat accounts in the last one year is due to the good returns given by the equity market and the easy process of account opening by the brokers for their clients. Apart from this, due to increasing financial knowledge and growing popularity of the market among the youth.
Decline in the number of active accounts
Active accounts on the NSE fell 2.9 per cent month-on-month to 34 million in January, making it the seventh consecutive monthly decline. On a year-on-year basis, the number of such active users increased by 2.7 percent. The magnitude of decline was higher at 10.4 lakh accounts in January as compared to 7 lakh in the previous three months.
