Ritesh Shukla, chief executive officer of NPCI’s subsidiary NPCI International Payment Limited (NIPL), has informed that UPI is now going to enter many Gulf countries and North American countries. He said that after successfully entering the market of France and Singapore, we can take entry in many countries of North America and Gulf countries soon, although he did not give information about any specific time of its launch.

Talking to Moneycontrol, Ritesh Shukla also said that the government is focusing more on launching UPI in those countries where Indians travel the most. Significantly, every year a large number of people from India go to the countries of Gulf and North America. In such a situation, Indians will be benefited the most by launching UPI in these places. It is worth noting that NIPL was established in April 2020. Its purpose was to take the Unified Payment Interface and Rupay outside India.
Working together with different countries
CEO Ritesh Shukla further said that we are working closely with different countries to expand the service of UPI abroad. NIPL is engaged in developing infrastructure for UPI in many countries. At the same time, the system of interoperate is being developed in many countries. Cross border UPI was launched by Singapore on 21 February 2023.
After this, the government had started the facility of UPI for foreign travelers and NRIs at the G20 Summit. On July 14, PM Modi announced that now Indian travelers can pay for the Eiffel Tower in Paris through UPI. Along with this, 13 countries including Malaysia, Thailand, Philippines, Japan, South Korea have signed MoU with the Government of India on this matter.
